테너 김건우는 경희대학교 음악대학 성악과를 수석으로 졸업하고 동대학원 수료했다. 독일 마인츠 국립 음악대학에서 콘체르트엑자멘을 최고점으로 졸업하였다. 2016년 7월, 세계 최고 권위의 오페라 콩쿨 “오페랄리아”에서 1위와 청중상을 동시에 차지한 뒤 전세계의 주목을 받았다. 그 외에도 서울 국제 음악 콩쿨에서 2위, 캐나다 몬트리올 국제 음악 콩쿨에서 1위, 맨하탄 국제 음악 콩쿨 1위를 비롯해 약 2년동안 괄목할 만한 성과를 거두었다.
그의 오페라 주역 데뷔는 2015년 국립오페라단 시즌공연 오페라 <진주조개잡이> 나디르 역으로 이루어졌다. 이후 2017년 이탈리아 모데나에서 오페라 <청교도>의 주역으로 유럽 무대에 성공적으로 데뷔했다.
2017/18 시즌에 그는 영국 로열 오페라 하우스에서 <람메르무어의 루치아>, <세미라미데>, <살로메>, <더 하우스 오브 더 데스>, <맥베드>, <로엔그린>, <팔스타프>, <스페이드의 여왕>, <라 트라비아타>, <빌리 버드>, <코지 판 뚜떼>에 참여했다.
2019년 7월에는 특별히 로열 오페라 하우스에서 도니제티의 오페라 <연대의 아가씨> 주역 데뷔를 하였다. 영 아티스트가 주역을 맡은 사건은 로열오페라 역사상 처음있는 일이었다.
2019년 겨울, 이탈리아 베르가모에서 도니제티의 <니시다의천사>의 세계초연 프로젝트에 주역으로 참여, 성공적으로 이끌었으며, 이 연주는 메이저 음반사에서 BLU-RAY 영상물로 출시되었다.
이후 2020년과 2021년에 국제 오페라 어워즈에 후보로 선정되기도 하였다. 2020년 부다페스트에서 벨리니오페라 <몽유병의여인>엘비노역으로, 코로나 시국에도 스톡홀롬 로열 오페라에서 베르디 오페라 <리골레토>만토바공작역으로 활발한 활동을 이어갔다.
2021년 세계적 권위의 글라인본 오페라 페스티벌에서 모차르트오페라 <여자는다그래>, 도니제티 <돈파스콸레>에서 주역으로 분했다. 2022년 미국 샌디에이고 오페라에서 <여자는다그래>미국 극장데뷔를 이루었다. 샌프란시스코 오페라를 비롯한 대형 극장에서 꾸준한 러브콜을 받으며 활동을 이어가고 있다.
Konu Kim is a graduate of the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House where his roles included Arturo Bucklaw Lucia di Lammermoor, Mitrane Semiramide, Maintop Bill, Gastone La traviata, Chaplitsky The Queen of Spades along with numerous other appearances on opera and concert stage. Kim completed his formal studies in his native Korea at the Kyung-Hee University in Seoul, the Korean National Opera Academy with continued education in Hochschule für Musik Mainz in Germany.
The versatile tenor is gaining international attention with his appearances at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden as Tonio in La Fille du régiment, Nadir in Les Pêcheurs de perles for Korean National Opera, Leone in L’Ange de Nisida for Donizetti Festival in Bergamo, Il Duca in Rigoletto for Swedish National Opera and staatsoper Hannover , Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte and Ernesto in Don pasquale for Glyndebourne Opera Festival, Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte for San diego opera, Bao Yu in Dream of the red chamber for San francisco opera.
His upcoming engagements are Arnold Melchtal Guillaume Tell with Irish National Opera, Count Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte with Taichung national Opera, Tonio in la fille du regiment for Deutsche oper am Rhein, Count Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Swedish National Opera.
Kim is a winner of a number of prestigious awards including Grand Prix at the Operalia Competition 2016 and the Concours Musical International de Montréal. Further awards include the second place at the Seoul International Music Competition.
